Arcadia, MI: Overlook on Scenic Highway/Route 22

One of the best parts about road trips is being able to stop and get out of the car whenever you see something interesting. Michigan provided us with lots of interesting things to stop and see, including an abundance of scenic overlooks. (Actually, we found in Michigan that scenic overlooks were rolled into really nice rest areas, which we noticed even more once we got into the Upper Peninsula.)

I don't remember what spurred us to stop at this scenic rest area, but I am so glad we did. It wound up having this enormous staircase that led to an incredible view.

There was a viewfinder telescope that pointed out a few things we might be able to see. The day was clear but very sunny. We could definitely see Arcadia from here (one mile south) but we're not sure we saw the lighthouse in Frankfort.

The hike up these steps is absolutely worth it and doesn't take as long as you'd think.

This scenic overlook is just north of Arcadia on Route 22 (also aptly named Scenic Highway). There is an obvious parking lot but be prepared to look out for it or else you'll drive right by.

What's your favorite roadside attraction? I am a big fan of just stopping at overlooks and taking in the view. Sometimes we stop at random stores and those are fun too! You never know what you'll find.

  1. People all over Michigan have Route 22 bumper stickers on their cars. It's so gorgeous, no wonder people want to brag about it!
