Mackinac Island, MI: Ferry to Mackinac Island

There are only two feasible ways to get to Mackinac Island -- by sea and by air. We chose by sea.

We checked out of the hotel and headed down to where all the ferry services are located. They are pretty conveniently all together, but this also means that there's a lot of traffic right there. We had actually planned to use one ferry service but their parking lot had such a long line out of it that we kept going and wound up at another, the Arnold Line! And was it ever fortuitous that we did. We happened to get there just in time to get on their once-a-day bridge cruise!

For no extra cost than the ferry ticket, we got taken underneath the Mackinac Bridge. It was awesome and a great, great start to the day. It was incredibly windy and kind of terrifying to stand up (I was legitimately afraid the camera would blow out of my hands) but exhilarating.

And what a view!

The ferry ride didn't take too long, maybe around 45 minutes with this detour (it took a little bit less getting back). I love boats and being on boats so I was having a great time :)

I also think things just look different from the water.

Coming back, this is what the ferry terminal looked like. We were standing right next to a horse loading area :)

Have you been to Mackinac Island? How'd you get there? More posts from our adventures that day are coming up. It was such a fun day and we had the perfect weather!

  1. So jealous you got to go under the bridge! Every time my family goes I feel like we just missed the Bridge Boat.
