Subscription Review: Birchbox - January 2014

First of all, can I talk about how awesome my new DIY light box is? All these pictures were taken inside of it and I can really tell the difference. As I get better at figuring out where to point my lamps and get better at editing, these pictures should continue to get better.

Also I know I don't normally post on Saturdays, but my Birchbox box arrived earlier this week and I couldn't wait till next Wednesday to put it up and show off my light box photos ;) Here's what I got for January...

Lots of things are somehow packed into this little box. I have to admit the size of my first Birchbox last month surprised me -- I totally expected the box to be bigger based on the kinds of things I was seeing! But nope, they are just good at packing.

Birchbox includes an information card detailing all the samples and the cost of a full-size product.

First up is some crazy nail polish. I got nail polish last month too. I am really weird about my nails and don't like to put things on them that I can feel (just like when they get chipped, it makes me want to scrape it all off and I end up biting it, and one of my goals this year is to stop biting my nails), so this is a miss for me because of the glitter. I had the thought that I'd do one nail and see how it went, but I started to open the glitter -- not even fully open -- and it got all over me. So this is going to go into the presents pile, where it might sit a while since most of my friends in Bloomington are male. Anybody want some glitter nail polish?

Next up is something I was pretty interested in. This is a face serum that's supposed to fight signs of aging. Sitting at the computer all day and never getting enough sleep has made my face look so tired, especially around my eyes. I am trying this out to see if it really does anything. It went on very smooth.

I was really excited to get a 100% Pure product in this box, as I am thinking about the kinds of things that get put on my face (like the product above). This is thick lotion and it smells good. I like lavender. My trick to make these little samples last longer is to cut them open and squeeze all of the lotion out into a little jar that I can close (think travel size jar).

I'm always interested in hair stuff, so this generous sample size of glossing cream was right on. So far it's made my hair nice and shiny.

And finally, we had another lifestyle bonus in this box. I love tea and don't mind finding some in my box :) (I actually have a whole half drawer in our small kitchen dedicated to my tea collection.) I drank the English Tea No. 1 Friday afternoon and it was really good. Just opening the packet smelled delicious.

Last but not least, Birchbox also included these pretty cards. The backs have inspirational ideas on them to help start the new year off right.

Birchbox is $10 a month or $110 for a year (free shipping), which is like getting a free month. One of the best parts is the point system -- you get 10 points each for reviewing the samples you receive, and 100 points is $10 to spend in the Birchbox store. (You also get points for the money you spend in the store.) After signing up, you will fill out a profile that lets Birchbox know better what to send you.

Did you get Birchbox this month? What did you get? It seems like I never see two of the same boxes in reviews because they have so many different products!
