How was your weekend? Ours was great! Eric's mom and sister came to visit to help us celebrate Eric's 27th birthday.
We had awesome sunny-and-50's weather on Saturday (his birthday) and took advantage of it by going to the IU Art Museum, BuffaLouie's, and a tour of Upland Brewery's production brewery (write-ups of all these coming this week!). I love when we are able to get out and do stuff around town, and it's even better when the weather is so nice. (Of course, then it snowed on Sunday. Take what you can get.)
If you remember, Eric's camera sadly consumed a bunch of sand on our Michigan trip and he has been without one since day number two of our trip. Since I usually like the photos he takes better than the ones I do, I have definitely been missing his taking any photos when we go on trips. So for his birthday I got him a new camera! His old camera was a Casio (EX-Z90) and it was a great little camera. The photos he got with that camera were better than the ones I got with my DSLR, a Canon Rebel xT (which is very apparent in our photos from our road trip to Los Angeles in 2010). So I knew I wanted to get him another Casio, because the image quality on this hidden gem of a digital camera company is superior to all the other cameras I've used or seen other peoples' photos from. I wanted to get something that will last for a long time (unless of course it also takes a bath in the sand*), so I went with a Casio Exilim EX-ZR400. It's supposed to take really fast photos, has in-camera HDR, and has this auto mode which can detect all kinds of settings. I took a couple of photos with it yesterday and it seems pretty awesome. Hopefully he will get some nice photos from our future trips and I can share them here!
* This camera shouldn't ever be taking a bath in the sand, because the other present/crazy thing I did was buy a GoPro! We go to the beach fairly often on vacation and I hate having to worry about cameras getting wet and broken. I also think it would be awesome to have on hikes, roller coasters, road trips, bike rides, random sports (like mounting it on a frisbee), and putting it on the RC helicopter he already has and taking it flying. After doing a lot of research (I'm talking over a month of reading reviews, comparing video, comparing photos, and reading other peoples' experiences on various forums), I decided to splurge a little and get the newest/best one, the GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition. (Related, last year when I finally bought a nice laptop, I realized that spending a little more money to get exactly what I wanted was totally worth it and I had probably wasted a lot of money over the years on the "cheap" version of something that I would have much rather had the higher-end version of. No more. I will save where I can so I can get the nice versions of things that really matter to me, like cameras.) I am so excited to try it out (especially when it gets a little warmer here), and it also means that there will be the opportunity for some awesome photos (and video!!) coming up, especially when we go to places with bodies of water. If you have a GoPro as well I'd love to hear about what you've done with it, and if you don't I'd love to hear what kinds of things you'd like to see me do with mine!
Hope you have a great start to your week! It'll be a long one around here but February's almost over so Spring must be just around the corner, right? :)
