4th of July Weekend Events Roundup

The 4th of July is a pretty awesome holiday. It's summer, there are friendly explosions, and it's basically a universally accepted grilling and boating/pool day. As long as the weather is good, we will be spending most of the weekend outside with our families soaking in the holiday. Here are some events going on around Bloomington and the surrounding area that you might be interested in, too.

Bloomington
Parade (July 4th, 9-11am) - free parade on the Monroe Co. courthouse lawn at 10am on July 4th. Plus there is music by the community band that starts at 9am!

Fireworks (July 5th, 9:45pm)  - free (donations accepted) fireworks show at the Monroe Co. fairgrounds. Gates open at 3pm and will close at 9:30pm, and the show will start around 9:45pm. Live music starts at 5 and there are also food vendors. Please note that this is on Saturday, July 5th.

Fireworks (July 5th, dusk) - $5 instate/$7 out of state plates fireworks show at Monroe Lake at the Fairfax State Recreation Area. Please note this is on Saturday, July 5th.

There are other fireworks shows around Bloomington and Monroe County, and various other cities in the state of Indiana in general. Also check out this round up of Central Indiana fireworks by WISHTV.

Activities at Paynetown SRA (all weekend) - lots of programs going on at Monroe Lake at the Paynetown State Recreation Area. $5 instate/$7 out of state plates for entrance fee.

As always, there are about 10,000 other things to do around Bloomington this weekend. I like to use VisitBloomington.com's events calendar to find out about everything going on. I've found they are the best resource for all the events around Bloomington.

Columbus
Fireworks (July 3rd, 10pm) - free fireworks show seen near the Columbus Municipal Airport. This is the fireworks show I grew up going to. If you are looking for one to go to before the actual 4th, this is usually a good pick. Please note this is on Thursday, July 3rd.

Indianapolis
Fireworks (July 4th, 9:45pm) - Free; Indiana's largest fireworks display, shot off the Regions Bank tower, which supposedly can be seen for 10 miles around downtown.

Baseball (July 4th, 6:05pm) - The Indianapolis Indians are playing the Reds' affiliate Louisville Bats, and are offering people to stay to watch the fireworks show (above) at Victory Field. The July 4th game is sold out online, BUT the Indians will have fireworks after the games on July 5th and 6th too!

There are also tons of other things going on around Indy during the whole weekend. Check some lists out here and here! (lots and lots of concerts!)

As for our plans, we are hoping to hit up the Bloomington parade and one of the fireworks shows in town. Friday night we are some of the lucky ones with baseball tickets and will be watching the Regions Bank tower show from somewhere downtown Indianapolis!

Have a great 4th of July! What are you doing to celebrate? Anything big going on that I missed?

  1. Live music, food vendors and fireworks are scheduled in Martinsville at Jimmy Nash Park on Friday, July 4. Music begins at 5 pm; fireworks at dark. A similar event will take place in Mooresville at Pioneer Park Friday, beginning at 5 pm with a skydiver delivering the flag and fireworks at 9:45 pm.
