The plan after we left Chicago was to go to Iowa to see the Field of Dreams and maybe catch a minor league game in Cedar Rapids. However, a quick check of the weather as we headed out of town into very dark clouds told us that there was a 100% chance of thunderstorms for the entire day in Dyersville, IA, where the Field of Dreams is. So like any good road trippers, we modified our route to head north to Milwaukee's Miller Park, where rain doesn't matter thanks to a retractable roof.
We wound up getting to the park around 4:30pm, before anyone was even allowed to park! We parked at the stadium - Miller Park seemed to be its own little island where parking on a side street somewhere would be fairly difficult without a long walk - where general parking was $12 and preferred (next to the stadium) was $20.
Once we were able to park, we had a lot of time to kill before the 7pm game. We wandered around the entire outside of the stadium. Near the front is a much smaller baseball field some lucky kids get to use, which was pretty awesome.
The stadium is an indoor/outdoor one (it has a retractable roof they open on nice days and close on rainy/cold ones like this day), except for this one part behind the outfield:
Also, they have a slide just for the mascot. Every time a Brewer homers, the mascot slides down the slide.
We had plenty of time before the game to play on giant baseballs, see the tail end of batting practice, and get our photo taken while sitting in a giant baseball glove (what else are you going to use to catch the giant baseballs outside?).
We also had time to go to the Bud Selig Experience. The best write-up of it is here, and you can read Eric's reaction on his blog. It's a free experience within the park that tells a bit about Bud Selig's life and how he came to own the Brewers. It's totally worth it just to see the most realistic holographic Bud Selig at the very end. I was too surprised to take a photo (sorry!), so you'll just have to go see it for yourself. They only let about 30 people in at a time so there is usually a short wait. It was even more interesting to check this out on the night we were there, because the Brewers were playing the Braves, and the Braves actually used to play in Milwaukee and moved to Atlanta, and Bud Selig brought the Brewers to Milwaukee to replace them.
The Brewers did hit a home run so we got to see the mascot slide down the slide! That was great. They also shot off fireworks.
We had a fun time at the game and got to check another ballpark off the list! Miller Park is nice and baseball is always a good way to spend an evening.
