Just like last year, we used a pretty day to head into the mountains while spending time in Pigeon Forge for the holidays. We decided to go back to the same spot we picnicked at and do it again, before attempting a hike.
We stopped off at the first main lookout area you see (on the left) after getting into the park. It offers a truly gorgeous view of the mountains.
Then we headed deeper into the park. We decided to go back to the pull-off spot that has a view of Chimney Tops to eat our lunch. We had a fairly warm day (it was near 60 in town and sunny, so it felt like the 50s at our picnic spot) and didn't need jackets until we started hiking.
We didn't have too much "chimney" action this year, just a few wisps.
After eating, we continued to head up the mountain in search of a hike.
We wound up at Newfound Gap.
It was beautiful!
Unfortunately we had to turn around after this due to ice on the road (you can't tell in these photos, but there was ice and snow up here). But we lucked out with the views and it was nice to see something we hadn't before!
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not only gorgeous all year round, it's also one of the few national parks that's free to enter, so I doubly recommend getting yourself there.

Oh my gosh, you are making me so jealous! I loved visiting the Smoky Mountains with my family a few years ago and these pictures definitely confirm that we have to go back soon! Looks like you had a great Christmas break!
ReplyDeleteYou've probably already checked it out, but one of my favorite places we visited in the National Park was Cades Cove. Of course we went in the summer when there was no snow, but I remember it being absolutely beautiful.
Shoot, we have not yet been to Cades Cove. I remember you suggested going there a couple of years ago! We will definitely have to check it out. I am sure we will be back sometime this year when it's warmer and can be in the mountains for longer.
DeleteYou should totally go back soon :) And stop by here on your way down!
