Almost every article I read about "things to do in Atlanta" listed as going to the Varsity as a must-do while in the city. I would have to agree! I am a sucker for old-timey restaurants/diners (I love drive-ins and old-fashioned soda fountains), and this didn't disappoint. We decided to check it out for lunch on Monday, the day of the championship game.
The Varsity is definitely an old-timey diner-style restaurant. The prices are cheap, the burgers are made fast, and they have their own signature drink (Varsity Orange, and it took all I had in me to not go around saying "Who loves orange soda? Kel loves orange soda!" while drinking it). They also have their own signature tag line, "What'll ya have?". It seemed a very southern statement/question to me and I have a really hard time pronouncing it, so it must be an acquired way of talking. I got a little giddy when the girl at the counter asked me it, though, especially after reading so many reviews.
The food was tasty. It was like pretty much any other fast-food joint, except with a lot more charm and character. The best comparison I have is to something like Steak N Shake, but cheaper and less chain-restaurant-like. (The Varsity is definitely a chain at this point though, but limited to the general Atlanta/Athens/that part of Georgia area.) I love burgers like this (I definitely had a previously life as a teenager in the 40s and 50s, sipping milkshakes and chocolate cokes at a counter with a soda fountain behind it). They're also known for their hot dogs and those looked good too, but I didn't have one.
The view from the parking lot is also pretty great. You can see some of Georgia Tech's campus in one direction, and the Olympic flame from the 1996 games in another.
I would definitely recommend checking out the Varsity while in town. We went to the original downtown location, but they have about a million other locations too. In the downtown location, they also had a nice exhibit with some information, history, and pictures of all the famous people who have eaten there.
